Bandi & Lela Keliling Lamongan — Coded 2D Animation

Description

Bandi & Lela Keliling Lamongan (“Bandi & Lela Tour Lamongan”) is a 2D animated video of about five minutes, made for a teacher’s entry in the 2026 Lamongan teachers’ animation competition held by PGRI Kabupaten Lamongan, with the theme “Everything About Lamongan”.

Instead of animating in a video editor, the whole video is written in code: a single HTML page draws every scene with SVG and animates it on a timeline, at a fixed 1920×1080 stage.

Story

Kayla, an elementary school student, cannot answer her teacher’s question about Lamongan. Two fish from the class aquarium — Bandi the milkfish (bandeng) and Lela the catfish (lele) — freeze time and take her on a tour in a magic bubble. Each stop adds a stamp to her “Lamonganku” drawing book:

  1. Tugu Bandeng Lele — the city’s landmark.
  2. Tambak — milkfish ponds and the farmers who work them.
  3. The coast — fishermen and staying safe at sea.
  4. Food — local fish dishes and regional cuisine.

With four stamps collected, Kayla returns to class and answers with pride. The running joke is always the same: Lela guesses wrong, Bandi corrects her patiently, and the fact becomes easy for kids to remember.

Features

  • Flat-design, cut-out characters and backgrounds drawn as SVG, with a consistent outline and color palette.
  • Speech bubbles, captions, stop titles, and info cards rendered as HTML over the stage.
  • A player bar to scrub and preview, and ?t= to jump to any second.
  • A render mode (?render=1) that hides the player so the stage can be recorded and exported to MP4.
  • Sound effects synced to the timeline, with recorded narration and music added in the final pass.

Technical Decisions

Writing the animation as code made revisions cheap: changing a line of dialogue or the length of a scene shifts everything after it on the timeline, instead of re-editing clips by hand. The competition rules (MP4, 16:9, 3–5 minutes, at least 24 fps, PGRI opening and credits) were treated as fixed requirements, and every fact about Lamongan had to be verified before it went into the script.

Notes

Work in progress — the final video is due in November 2026.
